NY Required Signs
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was created and made a law in 1990 in an effort to eradicate discrimination against Americans with disabilities. Hotel signs are subject to ADA regulations, and for good reason. Hotels cater to visitors of all abilities, and if the appropriate signage isn't displayed, those with physical or visual impairments won't be able to find what they're looking for quickly and easily. Hospitality is about your guests and customers—people come first and that's why ADA Signs are so necessary.
The state of New York has its own unique set of rules and regulations in regards to ADA and fire/building code compliance. In 2014, the state of New York signed a bill that requires a new ISA (International Symbol of Accessibility) to be displayed wherever the symbol is required (see Bill A09934 for full details). What does this mean for you? If you are in the state of New York and are installing new signs that depict the ISA, the new style is required. Whether it's bathroom signs, safety signs, or room number signs, if the ISA is present, it must be the new symbol that complies with Bill A09934.
