Stairwells all look alike. They go up, they go down. They've got landings and doors on every floor. You won't find furniture in here; no art, no bay windows. Stairways are light on form and heavy on function. We all get lost or turned around all the time in stairwells, and that's without the added urgency that fire, blinding smoke, or a crowd in evacuation mode tend to create.

Stairs and Elevator Signs for Hotels

Stairway identification signs (or stairway ID signs) may serve a general purpose of directing traffic, but more importantly they deliver critical information in the event of an emergency—to your employees, to your guests, to any persons in the building, and to emergency responders.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), among other organizations—not to mention national, state, and regional codes—require identification signage be provided inside stairwells at every level. Signage should show the stair identifier, floor level, terminus of the top and bottom of the building, roof accessibility, discharge level, and direction to exit discharge. On floors that require upward travel to reach the exit, a directional indicator should also be provided. In hotels or similar buildings with individual room numbers, the signs should also include the room or suite numbers most directly accessed by each stair on every level. It's all about information that is consistently marked and located, and communicates locations and exits quickly and efficiently.
