Fire Exit Signs for Hotels
Fire is the most common emergency situation. It requires the orderly evacuation of everyone in the building at a moment's notice. You can't choose when or how fire will strike, so the best you can do—long before you choose and mount your signage—is develop a well–coordinated plan that takes into account every window, door, hallway, stairway and fire escape in your building(s), and how they should (or shouldn't) be used to get everyone out who might be inside at the time. Everyone will be exiting the building at the same moment. Can your hotel handle the load?
In the event of a fire, there will be no time to strike up a conversation or give commands. You have to leave the main communication in the hands of your pre–placed signage. This means that all reliable fire exits must be clearly marked and visible even in the event of power loss or smoke accumulation. A number of different signs can help. The messages are subtly but uniquely different, so placement is of critical importance. A fire exit sign with arrow can help direct traffic down a hall, around a corner, or through a door. "Fire exit only" signs mark doors that aren't intended for regular use, but will help absorb the massive traffic jam by permitting people to use them in case of emergency.
Some signage requires regular participation and upkeep before the event ever happens. "Fire exit do not block (keep clear at all times)" signs, or "This door for fire exit only," or "Fire exit keep door closed" are serious business. They help keep throughways clear. These are the doors you don't regularly use for business, but neither can they become impromptu storage areas. "Emergency exit only" (alarm will sound) signs let people know that they can both exit and notify others in case of emergency.
