Key Signage Requirements

  • Bather Load or Maximum Occupant Load signs display the number of bathers allowed in each area to prevent overcrowding and maintain cleanliness of the water.
  • No Diving signs are mandatory at pools with a maximum depth of 5 feet or less or in shallow areas of the pool.
  • When lifeguard service is not provided, a No Lifeguard on Duty sign is required.
  • California requires an illustrated CPR Instruction sign of artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures.
  • Emergency signage is required all at hotel pools. In Emergency Dial 911 signs list the nearest emergency medical service provider, their direct phone number, and the facility’s name and address.
  • Crucial Spa Rules signs must include warnings about hyperthermia, pregnancy, children, and drugs and alcohol. of adult supervision for children in the spa.
  • Emergency Shut-Off Switch signs clearly identify the location of the spa's emergency shut-off switch for staff access.
  • If your pool did not require lighting, a No Use of Pool After Dark sign is required.
  • All gates and doors leading to the pool are should bear a sign stating to Keep Gate/Door Closed sign.
  • Post a Persons Experiencing Diarrhea sign near the pool entrance that warns people with diarrhea or had it within the past 14 days not to enter the pool or spa water.
  • If your pool and spa area include spray grounds, post a Caution: Water is Recirculated sign.
  • If applicable, chemical safety signs that inform guests and staff about the location of chemical storage areas, such as gaseous chlorine, and safety precautions is required.

  • Language: Signage should be displayed in English and any other languages commonly spoken by your guests.
  • Legibility: Ensure all signs are clearly legible and visible from a safe distance. California has specific requirements as to the font size of pool and spa safety signs.
